Isolation Challenges
Point Roberts is uniquely vulnerable to isolation due to its geography. Our community relies on access through Canada for most transportation and supply routes, which can be disrupted by emergencies or political events.
When Isolation Happens
Whether due to border closures (such as after 9/11), pandemics (as seen with COVID-19), transportation breakdowns, or other crises, residents may be unable to leave or receive deliveries from the mainland.
What You Can Do to Prepare
- Maintain a supply of food, water, medications, and essential items to last at least 2 weeks.
- Have backup communication methods such as ham radios or satellite messengers.
- Coordinate with neighbors to share resources and check on one another.
- Use local resources whenever possible to reduce dependence on cross-border services.
Community Resilience
PREP works to support community coordination and ensure critical information gets to residents even when isolated. We encourage everyone to take part in local emergency planning and communication drills.
During an Isolation Event
- Stay calm and rely on local support systems like PREP and the fire department.
- Conserve essential resources and avoid panic buying.
- Follow PREP updates through official channels or emergency networks.
Our unique geography is a challenge—but also an opportunity to build a strong, self-reliant community. Preparing for isolation is key to resilience in Point Roberts.
