Tsunami Preparedness
Tsunamis are rare but potentially devastating events that can result from offshore earthquakes. While the risk to Point Roberts is relatively low, residents should be aware and prepared.
Understanding the Local Risk
Point Roberts is surrounded by water and located near tectonic zones that could produce a tsunami. If a major offshore earthquake occurs, a tsunami could reach shorelines in under an hour.
What to Do If a Tsunami Warning Is Issued
- Move quickly to high ground — the safest location in Point Roberts is the area around the Firehall on Benson Road.
- Do not attempt to leave Point Roberts. Roads through Delta would likely be flooded or impassable, and traffic could be heavily congested or blocked.
- Avoid beaches, marinas, and low-lying coastal areas immediately.
- Stay tuned to NOAA alerts and local emergency broadcasts.
Before a Tsunami
- Know your local evacuation routes and walk to high ground quickly.
- Have a go-bag ready with essentials, including a flashlight, radio, water, and medications.
- Sign up for emergency alerts and understand tsunami warning signs (such as sudden retreat of water).
After a Tsunami
- Stay on high ground until officials declare it safe to return.
- Avoid floodwaters, which may be contaminated or hide hazards.
- Help neighbors if you are able and check for damage at your home.
Community Tip
PREP encourages all residents to identify their nearest walking route to the Benson Road Firehall. Organize a practice walk with family or neighbors and be prepared to act quickly if a tsunami warning occurs.
