Wildfire Preparedness
While large-scale wildfires are less common in Point Roberts than in other parts of Washington State, conditions such as dry summers and strong winds make fire risk a growing concern.
Understanding the Local Risk
Point Roberts has many forested areas and summer visitors. Downed power lines, outdoor burning, and dry brush can all contribute to wildfire danger. Prevention and readiness are key.
Preventing Wildfires
- Follow local burn bans and fire safety regulations.
- Never leave campfires or grills unattended; extinguish completely.
- Maintain a defensible space of at least 30 feet around your home by clearing dry brush, leaves, and flammable materials.
- Report any signs of smoke or fire to 911 immediately.
Preparing Your Property
- Use fire-resistant roofing and landscaping materials where possible.
- Clear gutters and roofs of debris during fire season.
- Store firewood away from buildings and propane tanks.
During a Wildfire
- Follow evacuation instructions from local officials.
- Wear a mask or cloth to avoid breathing smoke particles.
- Stay inside if the fire is not immediately threatening and you're advised to shelter in place.
Point Roberts Considerations
Evacuation routes may be limited. Ensure your vehicle has fuel, and be prepared to shelter in place if roads are closed. PREP and the local fire department will coordinate response efforts and updates.
